One of the nation's most beautiful States, Meghalaya, lies hidden away in the eastern sub-Himalayan hills. It has a length of roughly 300 kilometers and a width of about 100 kilometers. It is a landlocked state in the North Eastern region, bordered by Assam to the north and east and Bangladesh to the south and west. The majority of the people in the State is ethnically tribal, and the main tribes include the Khasis, Jaintias and Garos other tribes like the Kochs, Rabhas, Bodos, Biates and Karbis are also prominent in some pockets of the state. The state is home to speakers of the languages Khasi, Garo, Pnar, Hindi, and English.

Meghalaya's emergence as an autonomous state on April 2, 1970, and its establishment as a full-fledged state on January 21, 1972, heralded the start of a new phase in North Eastern India's geo-political history. The capital of Meghalaya, Shillong, is situated at a height of 1496 meters above sea level. The name of the capital comes from a manifestation of a Deity known as Shyllong.

Meghalaya has been endowed by nature with plenty of sunshine, rain, virgin woods, high plateaus, cascading waterfalls, clear rivers, meandering streamlets, and, most importantly, strong, smart, and welcoming people. The monsoon can be unpredictable in Meghalaya as its altitude has an impact on the climate. Khasi and Jaintia Hills have a particularly pleasant and brisk climate. It is neither excessively hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter, although the climate in the plains of the Garo Hills is mild and humid, except during winter.
